Integrating microbes, genetics, and molecular biology to prevent cardiovascular disease
The Hypertension Research Laboratory
PhD students
Available now
We are always looking for bright and motivated scientists who are curious about the mechanisms and prevention of cardiovascular disease. We work with several national and international collaborations. We aim to expose our students to a wide range of techniques and labs, networking opportunities, and we support conference attendance. The lab head, Prof Marques, won the 2024 Monash University Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Graduate Research Supervision and strongly advocates for DEI and a positive research culture. Our former PhD students have been extremely successful in receiving national and international awards and travel grants, publishing in high-impact journals, and receiving fantastic job opportunities post-PhD.

Our supervisory style is very hands-on in the beginning, giving the student every opportunity for training and plenty of feedback so they can grow into exceptional independent thinkers and researchers. Please look at our lab manual before you apply to join us, so you know our expectations and team culture.
The Monash Doctoral Program is a 3-year research-intensive course that involves some coursework directed at career development. You are expected to do cutting-edge research and develop independent projects, read a lot of papers and be on top of the studies published in our field, write commentaries, reviews and research papers, perform experiments in the lab, and present at conferences. Still, we also hope you can have fun and make some friends for life in our lab - you will receive plenty of training and advice on how to achieve all of the above and thrive!
While experience in the techniques we work with is not essential, it is crucial to be a team player, motivated and willing to learn.

PhD scholarships for Australian and international students are available through Monash University. These scholarships are very competitive, cover living expenses, and waive tuition fees.
